Summer and Fall 2021 Youth Tutoring Program with Arco Iris Spanish Immersion School

Avni’s Note:

To all parents interested—

I can't tell you how grateful I am for this wonderful opportunity. I am very excited to be working with students from Arco! I hope that my online tutoring classes pique their interest; I created each syllabus with them in mind.

Here are the following classes I can offer students:

Mathematics:

Students will cover the basics in each course with me. My goal is to get them prepared for the following school year by becoming familiar with most concepts (building an intuition for math!) or to revise the previous year's coursework in more detail. I would prefer to conference or have a discussion over email with the parents and student(s) beforehand to decide which route they would like to take. Students will be able to cover more material depending on their ability to understand the concepts within a reasonable time period and participation (completing homework). I will administer tests at the parents' preference. I recommend these courses for all grade levels.

I've attached a link to Khan Academy's description of each course, and an outline of what I will teach.

- Bridge to Algebra (Pre-Algebra). https://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre-algebra

- Algebra I. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra

- Geometry. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/geometry

- Trigonometry. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/trigonometry

- Algebra II. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra2

- Intro to Precalculus (Bridge to Calculus). https://www.khanacademy.org/math/precalculus

Note: This course will be shorter, due to its similarity to the Algebra II curriculum. The only difference will be the presence of limits and other calculus related topics. I strongly advise students to have completed/knowledge in all preceding courses before taking this course.

MATERIALS REQUIRED: Writing medium (i.e. paper and pencil), basic calculator, access to the web and Zoom.

Science:

- Rudimentary Physics. Course encompasses basic scientific mathematics (dimensional analysis, significant figures), motion, waves, heat, gravity, conservation of energy and momentum, electricity and magnetism.

MATERIALS REQUIRED: Writing medium (i.e paper and pencil), basic calculator, access to the web and Zoom.

English/Reading/Writing/Humanities:

- Introduction to Classic Literature and Essay Writing

This will be my only course for this category. Students will explore the art of essay writing by reading classical Shakespearian, Greek, and Roman literature. Course covers basics of essay writing (i.e. building a thesis, essay structure, diction, sentence variation), critical thinking and analysis, and MLA formatting. Students will have homework, but won't have tests in this course. Instead, students will have to practice writing some short essays with my guidance. I strongly recommend this course for 8th graders going into 9th grade. High school will put a huge emphasis on reading and essay writing.

MATERIALS: Writing medium (i.e. paper and pencil), highlighters, access to the web, google docs, and Zoom. Access to a library is not necessary but preferred.

As far as scheduling goes, the tutoring sessions will last from the week of June 13th to the week of October 25th and will be held on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), anytime from 9AM-4PM PST each day. Parents and students can decide the number of weeks they would like the tutoring session to last, but I implore choosing a longer time period for tutoring since there will be more time to cover course material. Classes are one-on-one so that students are guaranteed a personal, targeted course plan that caters to their academic needs, free of charge.

If you are interested, please email asharma23@jesuitmail.org by June 7th, 2021. Tutoring slots will be on a first come, first serve basis.

With these courses, I intend for the students to have as much fun as possible while learning and building good study habits. As a student myself, I understand the need to learn but have fun too, and I'm glad that I can provide that for your students!

Thank you so much,

Avni Sharma
